NATUS ALGO® 5 vs. MAICO

Natus ALGO® 5

The ALGO® 5 Newborn Hearing Screener incorporates Natus proprietary AABR® technology to achieve a complete physiologic screen of the hearing pathway from the ear to the brainstem.

The ALGO 5 device uses the same statistical detection algorithm found in every ALGO screener since its introduction more than 30 years ago. All ALGO devices provide fully automated results that do not require review or interpretation. The ALGO line of newborn hearing screeners delivers reliable clinical performance supported by independent peer-reviewed documentation.

Fast and Simple Operation

  • Screens both ears simultaneously
  • Colored, customizable graphical displays guide you easily through the screening process
  • Fully automated, objective pass/refer results that require no interpretation
  • Completely standardized, pre-set screening parameters – no adjustments needed

Data Transfer and Data Management

  • Transfer of data via a network or flash memory
  • Compatibility with a variety of data management systems, including the Praxis proprietary data management system.

Years of 3rd Party Research

  • Natus enjoys years of positive 3rd party research by independent researchers on the Natus ALGO hearing screening devices.

MAICO

Over the years,  Medical Acoustic Instrument Company (MAICO) has manufactured a number of hearing screening and diagnostic test instruments.  Their Universal Newborn Hearing Screening devices are primarily based on otoacoustic emissions (OAE) technology which doesn’t test the entire auditory pathway.

While they have recently released a device that they claim uses auditory brainstem response (ABR) it is not a true ABR, leaving the infant, the hospital and it’s medical staff at risk.

Questionable Research

  • If one looks closely at the research presented by MAICO it seems to be authored primarily by paid researchers and not 3rd party organizations bringing the results into question.
